I Bit the Bullet….

May 12, 2010

So as most of you know by now, the three roles that consume most of my time are as owner of Key Hyundai, Mom to Carly and Brady and wife to my husband, Rob.  Recently I’ve begun to feel like something is missing.

I spend my days caring for our Key Hyundai employees and customers and my nights caring for my kids and husband.  Then, when the kids go to bed, I go back to work on Key Hyundai business, blogging, facebooking, answering customer concerns, preparing for meetings, etc.  It can be all-consuming.  I am sure my situation isn’t that different from all the working mom’s out there, but at the end of most days, I’ve done nothing for myself.

My passion lies in all things outdoors.  I love to ride my road bike, swim, hike and run.  Yesterday I was with my mentor and friend, Tom Samose, and he asked me, how often do you get outdoors and just enjoy nature and remember what’s important in life?  My answer was not enough.

So, last night I decided it is time for a change.  I have done some Sprint distance triathlons in the past and I want to do an Olympic distance one.  It’s a huge time committment but I’m up to it now.  When I woke up this morning, I bought a training plan on-line and set my sights on a triathlon in Vermont in early August.  I even went to the pool and did my first workout.

I’m going to hold myself accountable by blogging my experience here.  If you see me out on the CT roads, wave hello.  I’d love to hear from you about how you manage your work/life balance too.

I recently got this quote sent into my inbox and I think it applies to everything in life:

“From the space program, we learn that tremendous power is needed to
clear the pull of Earth’s gravity. So it is with breaking old habits.
Breaking deeply embedded habits such as procrastinating, criticizing,
overeating, or laziness involves more than a little wishing and
willpower. Often our own resolve is not enough. We need reinforcing
relationships–people and programs that hold us accountable and
responsible.”

As always, you can find me at jillcares@keycars.com or learn more about us at http://keycars.com   I am the owner of Key Hyundai in Manchester, CT, Key Hyundai in Milford, CT, Mom to Brady and Carly, wife to Rob and now a long-distance triathlete!  I like the sound of that.
