The Economy & Happiness

December 12, 2008

I can’t tell you the number of people that have stopped me recently and said, “how are you doing in this economy?”  I have heard the question from neighbors, parents at my kid’s preschool and even my doctor.  These are people who know I’m in the car business but never have asked me any questions about it.  Usually our conversations revolve around the kids or extracurricular activities.  That alone tells you what is top of people’s minds right now.  I think they are always surprised when I say, “we are doing okay.”  If I have time, I go on to explain that we are doing okay because I have faith in the future and I am grounded in the fact that ultimately, as long as my kids are happy and healthy, we have food on the table and a roof over our heads, we are doing better than over 80% of the world’s population.  According to globalissues.org, over 80% of the world’s population lives on less than $10 per day.  Just stop and think of your life in the context of that staggering figure.  That makes each and everyone of us so ultra-privileged to live in a democracy where we have control of our own destiny.

Of course, you can’t ignore the economic downturn.  But, Hyundai is a product that I 100% believe in.  It’s just time to get back to basics.  I think it’s a time for us to all be disciplined in our thinking and not let the negative news about the economy drag us into a financial recession and a happiness recession.  We need to turn off the 24 hour news, shut down the Blackberry and spend more time nurturing the things that bring true joy.  In my case, that’s time with my kids at the table doing arts and crafts or helping my 4 1/2 year old learn to sound out words in a new book.  What is it that brings joy in your life?  Fishing?  Time with family?  Reading a great book?  Let’s all make a commitment to healing our local community by spending less time worrying and more time creating our own joy.
