You Can’t Manage What you Don’t Measure & Other Car Buying Advice

October 27, 2010

You can’t manage what you can’t measure.  Isn’t that the truth?  From the beginning of time, we’ve been measuring.  We measured our harvests and the amount of water and sun they get.

We measure how many calories we eat and how much we exercise.  In fact, I recently learned that Weight Watchers was founded in 1962 and is still going strong.  Why is it going strong?  Well, the obvious answer is probably that people are always struggling to lose weight and Weight Watchers fits into that.  The less obvious answer is because Weight Watchers are experts at measurement and accountability.  They’ve created a system of measurement that is really easy to follow.  They’ve broken down food into points.  Those points are determined only through fat, calories and fiber.  So, you can be in the grocery store or any restaurant and be able to figure out the points of the food that you are going to eat.

I find that so many people dislike buying a car.  I think the primary reason is that they are afraid they are going to get ripped off.  But, if you figure out your budget beforehand (measurement) than it’s much easier to manage the car buying process.  As the owner of Key Hyundai, Ct’s Hyundai dealer, I’ve given this advice out many times.  Your first order of business when buying a car should be figuring out your budget and your finances.

The reality is that people like structure and like to be held accountable.  I see it everyday in our business.  If we set goals and hold people accountable to their goals, success follows and people are happy.  In the absence of this structure, chaos ensues.  This follows true in every aspect of our lives.
