How to Help Newtown with Cash and Kindness

I send a weekly email to all our new and used car customers with car buying info, tips about Key Hyundai, community outreach events and general life of a Connecticut car dealer mom/soccer coach/mentor/small business owner/community advocate news. This week was different, and I share that here.

It is with a heavy heart I write this week about the tragedy just up the road in Newtown Connecticut. This tragedy affects our country, our world, but it specifically affects Key Hyundai customers, employees and community.

Many of us are feeling helpless, but here is something simple that you can do to make the world a bit better, and will help you begin to heal as well:

26 Acts of Kindness for Newtown

I have committed to performing 26 acts of goodness over the next month and I invite you to do so as well! 26 acts of kindness is a simple direct way to reach out and make the world a better place. It needn’t be extravagant, just simple deed that makes the day brighter for someone someplace.

As Sandy Hook and Newtown struggle to recover and regain strength, here is a reputable source to donate to should you desire, where 100% of all funds go directly to the families impacted. Here’s where to donate:

Sandy Hook School Support Fund
c/o Newtown Savings Bank
39 Main Street
Newtown, Connecicut 06470

And please don’t forget our first amazing, brave responders: those who were on the scene in Newtown, and those that work hard every day in our own towns and neighborhoods. When you see a police officer, fire fighter, EMT – all those who rush in when the world is rushing out, please thank them for their service.

Grandpa Sam’s Life Lesson to Jill Merriam Dealer For The People

Key Hyundai, used cars, dealer for the people, annoying radio Jill MerriamI recently visited my 95 year old Grandpa Sam and 93 year old Grandma Rose, who continue to guide and mentor me as a the Dealer For The People, Connecticut car dealer Key Hyundai, a small business owner, employer, wife, mom, daughter, mentor and leader.

At my last visit, we didn’t talk new cars, used cars, or any cars –  but instead I had the pleasure of hearing part of their story I had never heard before.

I always knew Grandpa took a factory job at nights when he returned from the war, but I never actually heard the “why” behind his story. My Grandpa was a poor immigrant’s son struggling for a better life; a returning vet, young dad struggling to make ends meet…not unlike many folks I get to know today!

Working Hard to Live the American Dream

Grandpa Sam lived the American dream, and through grit and determination, he established himself as a leading automotive dealer in Connecticut. Take a listen, and see if you recognize anything in his story:

It’s with that same grit and determination, I am working hard to keep his tradition of finding the best opportunities possible for Key Hyundai customers, employees, and our community.

Thanks Grandpa, for continuing to teach me what you know.

Do you have someone that you admire and continues to teach you life lessons? I’d love to hear about him or her! Write me at jillcares@keycars.com!

Tips to Stay Positive in the Car Business and Life

With bizarre weather and bad news infiltrating our lives every day it seems, I recently was asked by both Key Hyundai customers and our Connecticut car dealership staff how I stay so positive and upbeat amidst such chaos?
So I told them!
Each week, I write a quick letter to update my Key Hyundai family, sharing tips, leadership techniques and life’s little moments in an effort to continue the amazing culture of providing solutions here. It’s like our own mini-facebook (except old school!) – a quick note to keep everyone in the loop of the goings on at our car dealership here in Vernon and Milford Connecticut.
So how do I stay so positive throughout the Hurricane Sandy chaos? Key Hyundai families uprooted, power outages, customers displaced, schools closed, and our Milford location closed for a full week?
The thing is, crisis strikes, and will continue to strike, yet we can only change how we react to it.

How to Stay Positive from the Dealer For The People

Here’s a corny little habit I’ve gotten into, and the one I shared with the folks at Key Hyundai. Warning: this is a bit hoaky, but I swear it works! It’s a simple little habit that helps me stay focused and positive, and above all, remember to be grateful for the little things that matter.

Go ahead, give it a whirl! What are the five things you are grateful for today?
