Dirty Trick Free Zone: Episode #5 – What Should You Do if Your Check Engine Light Comes On?

May 20, 2010

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQtyT7VlW_k] In today’s episode of the  Car Dealer Dirty Trick Free Zone, Jill Merriam talks about what you should do if your check engine light comes on.  Today’s cars are driven by multiple computer systems as well as a sophisticated emissions system.  There are tons of things that can trigger a check engine light, from something as simple as the gas cap not being tightened (triggers an error in the emissions system) to major issues such as true engine failure.  Your best bet is to go to a certified mechanic and have them diagnose it.  All dealerships have a diagnostic computer that we can plug into your car’s computer and pull out codes.  Those codes tell us where the problem is and help us to diagnose and fix the problem.  When your check engine light goes on, you should immediately schedule an appointment to have it looked at.  You don’t need to stop driving your car unless you notice that it’s acting funny.  If the light is blinking, you need to immediately stop driving your car and get it taken care of.
